The Dairy of World War II Survivor

My name is Yoshinobu, I am a Japanese soilder. I was born on May 3rd 1923, in Shimonogo Village, Nagano prefecture. Most of the people living in Shimonogo Village were farmers, including my family. The only thing we sold was rice, though. We ate everything else we grew. We grew potatoes, sweet potatoes, radishes and carrots. I had 1 brother and three sisters and we were all expected to help out our parent.
When I was twenty, I got drafted for the army. Back then, everyone got a letter saying they had to have a military health inspection when they turned twenty, and I passed the inspection, so they put me in the army. I was being post as a regular soldier.
During the war, I knew some people that said they were willing to die to protect Japan. I even knew some Kamikaze pilots during the war. A lot of those people committed suicide when they found out that Japan had been defeated.
Then, we have food to survive but definitely not any extra. I think people in the military were better off than most other people in Japan, though.
During the war, I was send to South East Asia. I was asked to killed people, but I’m afraid to do so but I do not have the choice, seeing all this innocent people who died make me felt pity to them. Whenever I walk past streets, I always see dead body lying around, some of their family member cried while holding to their late family member hand. I felt that war is so unfair to all this civilian who done nothing wrong, I hope I can spare those innocent life and the war can end soon.
We were asked to torture those anti Japanese but not all of them are Anti Japanese, some are just normal civilians. Many of them were torture to die without even knowing what they had done wrong.  British and European even the Malay and Indian became prisoner of war and were ask to work at the death railway. Due the bad condition, in which they had to work under hot sun with least food provided and the unhygienic living condition, many of the P.OW died of diseases.
On 6 august 1945, an atomic bomb hit Hiroshima and three days later another one hit Nagasaki. 125000 civilian died during the bombing and 50000 more due to the radiation poisoning. I think if my country didn’t had start the war, all this misfortunate would not had happen to our country. Soon after the atomic bomb hit Japan, Japanese finally surrender and I am glad that war finally over, people won’t had to suffer so much and most people can live in peace once again but I think those who lost their family during the war  will had hard time for them to get over this miserable period.
